Disgraced actress Noriko Sakai expressed her will to restart her life during her drugs trial that opened at the Tokyo District Court on Monday, citing her intention to get a divorce and to study nursing care in the future.
“I was exhausted physically and mentally because I was so busy,” said Sakai, 38, who is charged with violating the Stimulants Control Law, as she explained the background of her drug use.
“I have a tendency to try too hard to live up to others’ expectations of me. I thought (stimulants) would help me move my body. … I used the drugs of my own will. … I am the one to blame,” a tearful Sakai repeated.
Clad in a black suit and with her hair tied back, Sakai appeared at the first hearing of her trial with a nervous look on her face. She told the court she was “unemployed” when asked about her occupation.
During the hearing, Sakai said in a faint voice that she used stimulants several times a month from last summer and had sometimes asked her husband Yuichi Takaso to give them to her. The couple often used stimulants together late at night, according to Sakai. Takaso, 41, a self-proclaimed pro surfer, is also on trial for violating the Stimulants Control Law.
Sakai also stated the reason why she went missing after Takaso’s arrest in early August. “As a novice drug user, I thought the stimulants would be flushed out of my body in two weeks or so. I felt miserable,” said Sakai.
Referring to her future, Sakai remarked that she wants to study welfare and nursing care and devote herself to her personal life and work. Regarding her relationship with Takaso, Sakai said, “As far as I am concerned, we need to get divorced and rebuild our own lives.”
Meanwhile, the vice-president of a talent agency that sacked Sakai, who appeared in court as a witness in the case, showed his intention to support her personally, saying, “I have been taking care of her like a father over the past quarter of a century. I can’t abandon her because of my feelings for her.”
Sakai was hospitalized for mental anguish immediately after her release from detention and left the hospital early this month, according to a source close to Sakai. She told the court that she hadn’t been diagnosed with any drug problems and addiction..
